Direction
Ireland is a beautiful country. It has such a varied history, and a wonderful legacy of saving Scriptures for future generations when the Vikings raided their land. We owe a great debt to the monks of Ireland.
We also heard stories about how the monks desired to follow the directions that they believed God sent them for their lives. Living in God’s will. We all want to do that.
Their approach was certainly adventurous. They set out in boats without paddles in the seas. I think that gives new meaning to the cliché of being up a creek without a paddle. The idea was that God would take them where He wanted them to go. I think that was their version of “God is at work.” I would not do that. Would you?
Directing Thoughts
While I can’t imagine setting out on the seas without a paddle, I can understand that there come times to set aside our plans and schedules to allow for God’s Will to unfold in our lives.
Though I think this is a struggle for our generations in this era. We take our planners with us wherever we go and fill up the hours with meetings and activities. We’ve had teachings on “margins,” but I am not sure we know what that really means.
It’s a struggle to empty our thoughts and our hours to let God do His thing with us. Even if it is the desire of our hearts. To be His. To do His Will.
Unexpected
Yet how blessed are those times when we can let go. Cast the day onto the high seas and let the boats of our lives drift wherever He takes them.
Unexpected answers to the long-time prayers. Healings. Relationships restored. Financial needs met. And so much more.
A generous outpouring of God upon us.
We didn’t see it coming.
Because we didn’t allow the drifting in our souls where the Holy Spirit dwells.
Perhaps those monks had something going for them.
