Summer Kick Off Holiday
Many of us have headed to the lake to open cabins, put the boat in the water for the year, or camping. Some are hiking and biking and kayaking.
All good things. We need down time to replenish our bodies and souls. It’s a good thing.
Life is meant to be lived.
Memorial Day
It’s a weekend for honoring our fallen heroes.
It’s a time to honor our still living heroes.
It’s a time to remember our beloveds who have left this earth.
It’s a time for reflection.
Observation
I went to the cemetery yesterday and visited all my people up there. Flags were flowing everywhere. Quite a few persons were wandering the lawns with flowers in their arms. The sun was warm and the view of the city was beautiful.
My people were all right where we put them. They don’t move far. Even though I lose Nanna every time I go—but I found her. My Mama’s sparkly pink headstone outshone all the others around her. I bet she’d love that. “Chosen. Redeemed. Sealed.” Her story. As I stood above my hub’s stone, I still felt the satisfaction of his story on it. Sporting symbols. A cross. And a Scripture detailing God’s love for him.
I could go on, but I’m guessing that most of you have this same scenario in your families.
Reflection
I was surprised to recognize that I feel peace in the cemetery. So many folks buried there had expressions of faith on their stones. Hope rises in my heart.
I wonder at their stories. All those completed lives. And I look across the cemetery. So many. Yet their stories go on through time (the witness in stone) and eternity (yet to come). Peace fills my soul.
These people are not dead. They are merely waiting.
Waiting for the return of their Savior. Their witness lives every time someone sees their headstones. Their hope for eternity continues even in this waiting.
Jesus Savior is coming.
Soon.
As one who is still living on this earth, I am waiting for my Savior, too.
Are you?
“Lord, You have ben our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God” (Psalm 90:1-2 NKJV).
