His Law – Our Delight
Have you ever thought about what it means to meditate on God’s law day and night? I’ve been thinking about this lately.
We’ve learned about the law of God in a certain way. We accept it that way. We don’t even question it. The law is legalistic, right? It’s the 10 Commandments. It’s the do’s and the don’ts laid across our backs. We’ve rebelled at this. We don’t like the lists and punishments that follow the transgressions. The dirty looks, the shunnings, the guilt, the anger.
But we didn’t hear what Jesus said about it. He said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind … You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” Matt 22:37-40.
Did you catch that? There are TWO Commandments!
So—to delight in the Law of the Lord is to delight in God’s companionship.
“For s(he) will not dwell unduly on the days of his (her) life because God keeps him (her) busy with the joy of his (her) heart” Ecc 5:20.
God IS the Joy of our hearts. Worship is to enjoy Him as the Joy of our hearts.
His Heart of Love imparts to our hearts that busyness of sharing love, companionship, joy; and He guides our way as a result. Even that mutual joy, itself, is a result. It’s worship.
And if we are sharing with our Father God daily, then that same love, joy, companionship spills over to those around us. We can’t help loving our neighbor as ourselves, because we see our neighbor with heaven’s eyes.
This is the Law of the Lord. Delight in it. It’s worship.
“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night” Psalm 1:2.
