Twice last week I heard lessons concerning the Lord’s Prayer, once on the radio, and then on Sunday morning when my pastor began a time of teaching through it. I don’t know about you, but when I hear the same message repeatedly, I figure God wants me to pay attention.
Maybe we have forgotten the awe of God’s Name. We are so familiar with the Names of God, but how often do we really stop to consider that God’s Name is holy? His Name, like His Essence, is hallowed – set apart – like no other.
Yet, unlike all other religions, He is approachable to us. Our God is our Father. We are in a family relationship with Him. We have His ear—if we would only talk to Him. We are His workmanship, and if we follow His will for our lives –much would be different. Circumstances may still be what they are, considering our world is fallen, but how much more might love and mercy flow? How might we care for others and their destinies as well as our own?
Pastor Rod played a clip from Sandra Bullock’s performance as an astronaut in “Gravity,” where she was facing death and had never learned to pray because no one ever showed her. Oh my goodness. It certainly hurt my heart to think there are people facing the darkness of eternity who don’t know they can talk to God because no one showed them. God, as you teach me to pray, help me to show others how to pray, too.
I think what strikes me so strongly is the tenderness of God as Jesus led us, through His disciples, in a prayer that is a model for us to follow.
Our God is our Father. His Name is hallowed, He is set apart from all others. His Kingdom is here and, at the same time, it is still coming. May His will be done here as well as in eternity. He saves, protects and provides for us every day. He sent His Son, Jesus, to take our sins away. We must examine our thoughts and motives, then forgive others to make way for our own hearts to receive.
We have a patient Father who waits for us. I am grateful and thankful. Are you?
