Watershed
No pretty pictures with this post. Do I need to apologize?
About every three to four years, this scene occurs on my street. This time, it is right next to the curb and the – yep – the driveway. The guys have been really kind to fix it so I can come and go when they are not working.
You see, I live on a watershed. And water always runs down and in the path of least resistance. I bet you knew that. There are underground springs all over the north side of the plateau I live on. And lots of housing is going on up top. I don’t think there is too much thought given to the watershed because when they build, the water path changes. And then the guys have to come tear up my street to add more and more pipes.
You ought to see my street in a thunderstorm downpour. Whoa Nelly! It looks like a river. Then, in winter, it is shiny, like an ice skating pad. Which it is then.
How Is Your Foundation?
It’s a little unnerving to drive over it. Even though it’s safe enough. Unless I don’t steer perfectly and end up with a dangling wheel. No, I didn’t, but I heave a sigh of relief when I have crossed it – either direction. It looks like danger all around.
It made me think about the foundations we build under us.
The guys had to tear out the street, dig deep ditches, place the pipes, wrap it up, and shove the gravel and other ground materials around it before covering it all up. Will it work? Well, maybe for another three or four years. Depending on what happens up top.
How is your foundation?
Have you built your life upon a solid foundation? Or do you think about the waters underneath that shift and run free as they rise to the surface.
A shifting underground watershed. Carrying things like pride, shame, unforgiveness, selfishness, disgrace, deception, and all manner of unsavory crazes or preoccupations.
Have you checked your foundation lately?
Pay Attention to the Instructions
There is a safer place to cross than the end of my driveway. Where the True Foundation sees us to safety.
If we give attention to His words, we listen, don’t let our eyes stray where they should not, keep our hearts set on what He teaches us, then we will have life. If we are diligent to put one foot in front of the other and walk a straight line, He will establish the way for us. (Proverbs Four).
Our feet won’t slip into the crazy underground. We will be on the highway to heaven. And we will cross it confidently.
Pay attention to the instructions.
God’s Word holds Life before us.
A Firm Foundation.
So rich, Linda Jo. Foundational: where we reside / how we abide. You remind me to zero in, practically, spiritually and metaphorically, on the good to be gained as well practiced, in love.
May “Pay attention” keep resounding within as we go about our days. I am so grateful to have read this post today!
Bless you, Laurie. You do the same for me with your blogs. Just as our Father intends, right?
