I keep encountering the Bend in the Road. I’ll bet you wonder, like me, just what it is around that curve that I need to see and experience. Something drives me on. What is there just beyond that mountain in front of me?
This time of year, as the world turns those beautiful, dazzling orange, yellows, browns and reds, I start to get that “Something’s Coming” feeling of anticipation. Have you ever had that premonition? Where has God led you? What talents did you discover that you never knew you had? What joys spread out before you?
Sometimes the road twists unexpectedly. When driving over a mountain pass, it is absolutely imperative to turn the wheel of the car to bend with the road. Otherwise, disaster is inevitable. I get nervous driving the passes in the snow and ice, believe me! The snow has nothing on my white knuckles. But I keep going because what is at the end of my journey is worth it.
Bends come regularly in our lives. We drive along enjoying the scenery and suddenly a loop changes everything. Maybe one of those hairpin loops around the mountain. The trick is to be flexible and trust the One who sees the end of the road before us. When I round the corner in the road, what lies behind me disappears and what is before me opens wide. It seems like I can see forever. Adventure beckons. I want to try new things—go where I’ve never gone before. Explore. Be free to follow the Spirit’s lead. Where will God take me next?
Yes, indeed, Winter is around the corner and brings its own brand of beauty and hardship. But for now, the world is glorious and the sun brings it alive. Just like our lives are dull and dark until the Son, the Life Giver, shines upon us and all breaks into brilliance.
I feel the anticipation. What is coming next for me? What new road is He preparing? What new discoveries might be ahead of me? I wonder where I may need to apply the brakes? And will I have the wisdom to consult my map and not get lost?
I always want to be learning, but never arriving. The end is—well—the end! Draw me on, Lord. Always on the journey. Keep me at it.
“I will make each of My mountains a road, and My highways shall be elevated” Isaiah 49:11.
