Bowl & Pitcher, Spokane River
Indigo
Once again, I visited my favorite river after church this morning. I ran into a lady who had just moved to Spokane from Seattle. It was her first trip to Bowl & Pitcher and our lovely suspension bridge spanning the rocky depths and the racing waters.
I explained to her that I take pictures every time I visit. Sometimes the photos look the same, but it is always different when I am there.
In spring, it is aqua and even nearly lime green in the shallows. But today, the water had an indigo sheen. The sun came in at a slant instead of directly down from the sky. Everything had a colder feel—especially when the breeze blasted with chill.
A melancholy day signaling the onset of winter. Most leaves have fallen, leaving their branches bare sticks pointing upward.
Going Somewhere
The water is rushing. It is always the same. In a hurry to get where it is going. And the waters don’t know that death lay ahead when they merge with the waters of the mighty Columbia River and disappear into those depths.
Cheery thoughts, eh?
The coming of winter and the earth actively heading to slumber seem to bring on the melancholy thoughts. But they don’t have to be depressing.
This could be a time of burrowing in, like the animals that hibernate. Only this time could mean meditating on the things that matter. When weather slows down activity, it is a good time for introspection or study.
Or perhaps, with Thanksgiving around the corner, time to thank God for all He has provided over the last year—even through the obstacles and challenges.
Finding Somewhere
Even as we watch the golden leaves drifting through the wind as the sun glints on them, the reminder of God’s constant care and presence comforts us in this dying season.
And like the river, none of us stand still. Our lives are constantly moving. We are going somewhere. That somewhere is the goal to identify. To set our faces forward. To set our attitudes forward.
Apostle Paul wrote that he expected a crown of righteousness to be placed on his head when he arrived in heaven. He expected that for all of us who have placed our hope in Jesus Christ.
Now would be a good time to ruminate on that.
