Jesus told us that in the end times there would be wars and rumors of wars, and among other disasters, earthquakes in diverse places. Has anyone been counting?
While the world is still reeling from the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, last month (and all the ones the months before that), here we are with the largest magnitude on record in Japan just days ago. Tsunamis from that one have even done damage on our shores this time. A new menace has been introduced as well with this latest earthquake: nuclear.
An earthquake can loosen the walls of a nuclear reactor pretty fast. Japan is showing us. I won’t go into all the ugly things that can happen with nuclear power run amok, that’s well documented. But I would much prefer not to go there. Thank you.
We sit on unstable ground right here in the Pacific Northwest – God’s country. And it is God’s country, beautiful trees and mountains (some that shake), wildlife everywhere, lakes and hiking trails. And I saw it all disappear some years ago when one of the shaking mountains blew her top. It happened pretty fast.
Our beloved planet may be in the throes of coming apart, but that is not news, either. Since Noah’s flood when the crust of the earth first broke into pieces we have been living in this brokenness.
So, do we live in fear? Should our hearts fail? Our minds go numb?
But our Hope is in God. Jesus warned us that these things would happen. He said they would grow in number and intensity as the birth pangs come upon a woman with child. He said this is only the beginning of sorrows. We have a long way to go.
Yet for those who endure in His Name, He will deliver. How do we trust Him through every hard time? Do we come to Him with our loved ones, plans and treasures? Wisdom would decree that we lay our lives before Him now while it is still day!
“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” Matthew 24:30.
