Longing For Home
“I’ll Be Home For Christmas”. This famous song, written by Buck Ram, Kim Gannon and Walter Kent, always sounds like Bing Crosby’s vocal chords to me. Bing is a hometown boy and it just wouldn’t be Christmas without him.
War ruled the era that birthed this song. Our men and women from all over the country went overseas to fight for our safety and security. They were part of the Greatest Generation, so known for their sacrifices and their hope.
Home In Our Dreams
The poignant line at the end of the song said it all, “I’ll be home for Christmas if only in my dreams.” Many soldiers did not make it home for Christmas or any other day.
What does it mean to be home for Christmas? Is it the tree glowing softly in the house? The carols coming from the media center? The enticing aromas from the kitchen? Could it be the laughter of family as gifts are exchanged? Or does all this fade to a dream for one who is home alone?
He Left Home
This is the time of year we celebrate the One who left home for Christmas. Jesus left His home in heaven to come to a war-torn earth to fight for our eternal safety and security.
He never took cover in a foxhole. He was lifted high for all to see as He gave His life. Three days later His glory broke free when He rose from the dead, so you and I could one day truly be home for Christmas forever.
