Last week I wrote about God’s untamed and unbridled power as I contemplated the river crashing through the rocks. On two levels, I wonder if this ownership of power is why some people don’t seek God? And, on the other side of the coin, why some are afraid who do seek Him?
If we acknowledge His power, then what does that say about us? Do we have to give up who we are? Our intelligence? Our hopes and dreams? What about our desires? And what happens if we refuse?
On the other level in question, I believe governments are working on ways to harness nature. How would it be not to have tornados or hurricanes or blizzards? Wouldn’t that make life easier if we could control this? Maybe we could make a paradise on earth as far as weather goes?
But—there would still be the question of earthquakes and tsunamis and volcano eruptions. If we could harness weather, then why couldn’t we harness the shakings of the earth itself? Surely we could send up some kind of satellite that could send a zap beam to a couple of troublesome plates! Still, that wouldn’t solve the problem and maybe it would be the Big Bang End if the satellite broke down and we couldn’t get up there to fix it! That would certainly solve our problems!
So we come back to God’s unexplainable power. He only can control the earth, the universe and everything in it. The Bible says He created a perfect world. Through a chain of events lasting through several millennia, it is now a most UNperfect sphere. However, the Bible also tells us that God is not done with humanity.
So we are back to the original questions. Do we not seek God because we are afraid of His power? Or do we think we are slaves if we bow before Him? I think it is just the opposite. There is comfort in acknowledging His power. He can do anything—and He chooses to love us. He sent His Son to show us His heart toward us even to sacrificing His life to restore our lives to us! He encourages us to dream and to step out in faith where His power sees us through those risks to accomplish the things He gives us desire to do.
He will come back again one day soon to restore the earth to the perfection He first made it to be. For now, we bring Him our accomplishments and bow before Him with praise to acknowledge His power and His glory. Amen.
“…they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” Matthew 24:30b.
