Will we believe God?
This question reared up again today while I was worshipping at church. Our pastor preached from John 14.
“In My Father’s house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you,” Jesus says. He continues to assure His disciples (and us) that He will go to prepare our place, then come back and get us so we can be with Him. He said we would know the way.
Then Philip, one of His disciples, protests that we don’t know the way.
I imagine Jesus sighed. How many times and how many ways does He have to show us before we will believe what He says? “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father but through Me”. So we DO know The Way.
Do we still not get it? Jesus explains, “Have I been with you so long and yet you have not known Me, Philip (or put your name in here)? He who has seen Me has seen the Father…Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in Me?”
Jesus pleads for us to believe Him. Believe In Him. Believe in the works that He does. Yes, He is still doing marvelous works if we have eyes to see and ears to hear…and of course, hearts to believe. Why is it so hard to simply believe?
I am reminded of when Jesus sat on the rock and overlooked Jerusalem with tears, crying, “Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, I would have gathered you under my wings as chicks, but you would not.” Who can resist His love? He just wants to gather us in His arms and love us.
Maybe this is what it means to follow Him? To believe that He loves us. To believe that His arms are held out for us to run into. To believe in His tenderness towards us. To believe that He is preparing a place for us. To believe that He is preparing us for that place. To believe that He wants us with Him forever.
What joy to follow Him to the place He is preparing for us.
“I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you” John 14:18.
