The Scribettes, my writers group were asked, “What character trait of God most affected you last week?”
I thought about that for a while. Then, I had to admit that what I have loved most about my God last week was His Beauty. My flowers are in full bloom and they are beautiful. It is a fruit of my labor. But I know I would never see these gorgeous blossoms, or the butterflies, or the hummingbirds around them if God hadn’t made them.
He cared that I should relax as my eyes feast and my nose gets a whiff of those luscious fragrances. My Father is beautiful and I see His Face in my flowers. It makes the labor worth it.
Today I heard the hymn, “My Jesus, I love Thee.” You know, the one that talks about how we can know He is ours. How He pardoned us from Calvary’s tree. We thank Him for wearing the thorns across His brow and if ever, we loved Him, it is now.
I look at my roses. How pure and beautiful they are. Yet, they are covered with thorns. Hmm. Is that a curse, or maybe it’s reminder?
There is great beauty in those mature flowers. They give off the most heady fragrance. They do retell the Story of Redemption every growing season. Jesus wore the thorns across His brow that made it possible for our pardon from sin.
And one day, we will wear crowns of roses that speak of the full maturity of our redemption and we will toss them at His feet as we honor and love Him for Who He is and what He has done for us.
I will always have roses in my garden.
“If ever I loved Thee, My Jesus, ‘tis now…”
