When things look out of control like they did around the world this last week, it is easy to fear what might come next. I wonder if it’s possible for politicians to sort it out? Can there be peace or is it an illusion? How close is the next world war? Or Armageddon?
Wildfires are taking out homes all around us and the smoke fills the air. I wonder if the homeowners who have lost everything feel despair? Can they go on?
This weekend I am sitting on the deck of a lovely house on a lake. The morning is quiet except for the gentle lapping of the waves on the shore. The sun is casting its early morning dazzle across the water and through the trees I can see varying shades of green backlit by the sun. It’s beautiful and peaceful.
Every so often a flock of geese announce their fly by and I wonder if they are practicing for the winter trip south?

It’s hard to reconcile the anger, fire and death images I saw and heard on the news earlier this week with the quiet, calm peace on the lake now.
How do both things happen at the same time and how am I to feel about it?
It is a dangerous world and there is an enemy who has set out to steal, kill and destroy us. Sometimes it seems like this enemy has the upper hand. But he does not. Even through anger, fire, and death. He does NOT!
Like inserting a peaceful lake interlude into the fire of the world, we can turn our eyes from the work of the enemy to the One Who loves us. Jesus endured anger, fire and death on a cross for us. As we look to Him, our fear fades away. No matter what. For He tells us that He has a future and a hope for those who fix their eyes on Him.
“Affirm your promises to me—promises made to all who fear You. Deflect the harsh words of my critics—but what You say is always so good” Psalm 119:38,39 The Message.
