I just read a story about the American Revolutionary War. What struck me was how similar to now it seemed. Cultures were clashing. Ideas were rising, yet the other side sought to crush them. Worldviews were definitely different – the elite and the rest of the people. One had to be careful what one said and to whom one said it. It could be a matter of life or death. (Maybe there really isn’t anything new under the sun after all?)
It made me consider what we are going through as a nation now. Will we survive this clash? And what is it all about? I think, in the big picture, it’s about world power and who will rule us masses.
Conscience
In the more everyday picture, I wonder how much of it is a matter of conscience? Do we have conscience these days? What exactly IS conscience? And how does it affect us and others around us?
Conscience is the individual’s assessment of righteousness. I looked it up in the dictionary. Yep, a paper book. And that’s quite a definition: an individual’s assessment of righteousness.
Righteousness
Righteousness. Moral judgment. There’s even argument about what that is.
The Scriptures tell us that when trained by the Holy Spirit and Word of God, then goodness and harmony result.
When it is absent, there is no measure of right and wrong; or how to care for others. Chaos—even evil—rules as a result. Those in the talons of evil must obey their schemes out of fear and possibly out of penalty of death or threats to loved ones.
God help us and save us from seared consciences!
Look and Listen
I read a book. I thought about conscience and righteousness; the chaos my nation seems to be in, and then I wondered just how often do I follow the Word of God where goodness and mercy work?
Then I listened to the radio. And I heard Ron Hutchcraft say,“Failure is not longer than a day.” I sure am glad about that. Jesus’ mercies are new every morning. I needed to hear that! I think even national or world crisis is safe in His Hands.
“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, therefore I hope in Him” Lamentations 3:22-24.

Linda Jo, excellent post! I crave a conscience based on the plumb line of the Word of God. Have you seen a movie about the Revolutionary War called “Beyond the Mask”? It’s my favorite movie. It has historical fiction, romance, action, and is a story about God’s redemption. I highly recommend it.
Hi Lynn: I will have to check out that movie you recommended. Thank you for your kind words.
