I listened to the radio some time ago concerning the beauty of the cross. This form of execution most hideous, humiliating, excruciatingly painful. Ugly.
I heard the song by Johnny Diaz. As he sang words about our precious Savior and what the cross means to us through Him, a mental picture continued to play through my mind.
This came from Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of Christ”. It’s the scene where Jesus, in His complete exhaustion from beatings and blood loss, slipped off the cross as they were ready to nail Him to it. I could see the determination in Him as He rolled over on to His hands and knees to crawl back up on the cross and ready Himself for the nailings.
Why would He do that?
The soldiers would have pulled Him up and slapped Him into place. He didn’t have to expend that last bit of energy to place Himself there.
Why would He do that?
I have no trouble imagining that scene to be real. Jesus came to expend Himself as a sacrifice on that cross, dying a heinous death, to make it possible for us to choose eternal life through Him.
Why would He do that?
In Noah’s day, He picked a righteous family and simply destroyed the rest of humanity. The stink of sin was so putrid it clogged up the spiritual atmosphere. But He chose not to do that again. He chose Life for us instead of death.
Why would He do that?
Because of His great love and mercy. He is worthy of praise forever. And we can be there to praise Him together.
If we choose Life. Through Jesus, Who gave Himself for us in the beauty of the cross.
