I remember the lazy days of summer as a kid, riding my bike to the store, to school, to the library, to my friend’s house and just up and down the street. Bike riding was fun.
It still is. Although the nature of most of the bike riding you see around is geared more toward sports events or racing. But still, as I tell everyone, I am a bike mosier. I like moseying and taking photos. Stop and just look and contemplate the scenery I see.
A group of us went bike riding this weekend along Spokane’s Centennial Trail. What a lovely day. Once we were organized and on our way, it was fun to feel the wheels underneath and the breeze in our faces.

As I said, I mosey. The river was so calm in this area and reflected everything. And, since I am prone to such thoughts, I thought about the Bible verse that talks about the mirror reflecting us and we forget who we are once we walk away. Funny how God puts reminders of His Word everywhere we go.

And I just had to get this shot. Those berries against that blue sky just beckoned me to stop and immortalize them. Only problem: I thought I was pretty well in front of everyone but I wasn’t and nearly caused a bike pile up. Phew! That was close.
However, here is this beauty to admire. Luscious, I think. Don’t you?
As we came around the bend to see this, I thought of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Yes, I know this is not the brown Mississippi, but instead, it is the wild and crazy (usually) Spokane River. Still, it evoked thoughts of hot summer laziness. Can’t you imagine those days? Now don’t let the hurry of life today get in the way. God meant for us to rest at times.
Isn’t that what the Dog Days of Summer mean?
Ah yes – the pain and the pleasure in every endeavor. I did manage to spill off my bike on the way back. Maybe I was too busy looking around to pay attention? Or maybe I caught my bike wheel in a rough spot. Down I went. Sigh.
While my toes may be black and hard to walk on for a few days, it doesn’t dim the memories of the fine day and wonderful friends who went bike riding to enjoy each other and God’s creation.
“Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty firmament!” Psalm 150:1.
