Innovation is a good thing. I’ve always found it so. But I wonder if innovation can go just a wee bit too far?
I Just read about driverless cars now being tested by Google. What was that? Driverless cars? Have we been jettisoned in fast forward to the world of the Jetsons? If you don’t know who the Jetsons are, you can look them up.
However, I will take some pity on you. ‘Way back in the dark ages—that is, just a few decades ago—a futuristic cartoon about a family was very popular. Cars were space rockets that flew through the air creating traffic jams just like cars on the ground do. Real super highways!
At home, Mrs. Jetson had the help of the live in maid—robot Rosie. Now Rosie wasn’t just your usual monotone robot, she had a personality and ruled the roost. The family rushed everywhere. In short, not much had changed in the future except for how we got it done.
Rewind. Here we are, testing driverless cars. Why do we want driverless cars?
Do we want to program our cars to get us places so we can sit in the back seat and work more? Can we squeeze more productivity out of our commute?
Maybe Rosie the Robot cleans our houses so we can continue to produce (whatever it is we are being productive for)? I must admit, I am not crazy about cooking. Rosie could do the cooking. She (it?) can do the yard work, too. And the rest of the chores. So we can be productive, of course, doing things that matter.
Maybe Rosie can love on my kitties for me while I work away on my computer producing something for somebody. I wonder if a robot could be invented to sleep for me, too, so I can keep working 24/7. Think how much I could get done/produce.
I wonder if I am a robot, too? A driverless car could be quite an enhancement to such a life.
And Jesus said, “’Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.’ For there were many coming and going , and they did not even have time to eat” Mark 6:31.

This was a very thought-provoking post, Linda Jo. Thank you for writing and asking the questions that need to be asked. Producing robots…even Jesus saw that happening around Him. Great reminder that history repeats itself. But we need not be part of the repeating. Hugs, Nanc
