It’s Spring. The days are cold, then they are hot, then they are cold again. You have to grab the sunshine whenever you can.
Friday, my friend Linda and I grabbed it. We went kayaking. Yes, it was chilly. We wore our long sleeved sweatshirts and our long pants. We were even proud of ourselves because we got in and out of our kayaks without getting wet. Not even our toes!
We paddled around the bay, enjoying the sun in our faces. The clean swish of the paddles through the water felt so good. We admired the beautiful homes along the beaches, imagining the activity there in just another month.
Alone on the water, we quietly examined the new reeds just poking up along the shore at the end of the bay. Water lilies were growing just under the surface—soon a whole field of them will cover the water. We stopped to snack and drift in the breeze. How relaxing.
As we continued to move along the shoreline, the sun dropped in the sky indicating time to head back to the launch. We could have traced our way back around the bay, but it might take too long. So we decided to cut out across the lake.
It became an adventure. The wind whipped up, the water suddenly developed whitecaps around us, and we found out the strength of our arms. Stroke…stroke…stroke. Water over the bow. We kept going. The boats rocked and rolled. It certainly was a contest against wind and water, but the sun still shone and we rejoiced as we crossed the lake without dire incident.
Not bad for the first time out this year. It was a wonderful Spring afternoon. Thank you, God.
