The grasshoppers jumped around my feet and the crickets sang me a song as I rambled through the meadow at the end of my block. The sun warmed my skin most comfortably. Some may argue with me, but it was a most pleasant early Fall afternoon.
As I walked, I contemplated my sister in law’s funeral yesterday. I thought about how she’d been alone, as was my husband, when she stepped into eternity. Then, as I think most of us do, I wondered what that moment might be like.
I felt the Presence of God with me, reminding me of a time when I dreamed I was dying and called out to Jesus. I’ll never forget His voice in my ear—so close—saying, “I’m here, Child. I won’t leave you. I’ll always be here.” When I woke up, the sound of His voice stayed with me. It was so real.
I am convinced that when my sister in law, and my husband, passed that veil separating this life from the one to come, that Jesus was right there, talking them through the process, holding their hands, soothing their fears and showing them His Face.
I remembered that when my mother in law passed, this same sister, her daughter, was there holding her hand. When Mom In Law’s surprised face looked beyond somewhere not discernable by an earthly eye, she squeezed Sis’s hand and left. My stepdad had a pleased smile on his face when the time came.
Back to my walk: I stopped to gaze at the blue-hazed mountains and the valleys between. I heard the birdsong. I said aloud, “Lord, how can I go to work tomorrow, after considering all these things? Life is so short here. As I go to work five days out of the week, I miss so much.”
Child, He replied, you’ve been glimpsing eternity. You’ve heard me assure you that I will be with you. You’ve seen the witness of those who have gone before you. Believe me when I say that I am preparing a place that is far more beautiful than your eyes see right now. You will be amazed and you will realize that you will miss nothing here that won’t be given to you and magnified thousands of times better. Go to work and do your part to bring my Kingdom about.
Jesus is faithful on both sides of the veil. Praise God, Lord Almighty, who was and is and is to come.
“I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” John 14:3.
