“Avenge me of my adversary!”
I read this morning of a poor widow who kept coming to a judge with this demand. The story says he did not fear God nor did he regard men. Here’s a guy who sounds to me like he pretty much liked things status quo. It seems he lived a comfortable life and had things his own way most of the time. Sounds like a lot of us, doesn’t it?
Then along comes this lady. She probably didn’t have too much social clout. He hardly noticed her—except that she wouldn’t go away. Like a gnat or a mosquito buzzing around his head, there she was. Every day. There she was. Getting in his way. Sitting on his doorstep when he went to work; staring at him while he ate his lunch; standing and waiting for him when he left the office. Emailing him when (oh, ok, that’s too much, right?).
“Avenge me of my adversary!” The same refrain, day after day.
Finally the day came when he said, “Though I do not fear God nor regard men, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.”
YES!
I don’t know what her trouble was, but I do know there are plenty of us with trouble now. How persistent are we for answers? Do we give up if we don’t see an answer in a time frame we feel we should? What if the Judge has some REALLY GREAT answer up ahead, but it takes a lot of preparation time and we give up too soon?
Sometimes God’s answers for us do take a while to come. But Scripture tells us that He is never late. All things come in His timing. It’s up to us to keep standing on His doorstep and wait for Him to come through. And—He will. He ALWAYS comes through. Count on Him.
“Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:6-8.
