We’re still talking about money. I think. And I promise this is the last money post. Although I have a question: how many hours a week do you work? It seems people are busier and busier and its hard to find a time when schedules intersect so family time or friendship can happen.
I communicate with several by voice mail. Thank goodness for voice mail!
Buzz: “Hi Jane, when are you free for coffee?”
Buzz: “Hi LJ, let’s shoot for next Tuesday.”
Buzz: “Sure, Jane, next Tuesday. Where and what time?”
Buzz: “How about after work? What time do you get off?”
Buzz: “About 5, how about you?”
Buzz: Ok, you got the idea. I bet a lot of your communications look like this, too. Or if they don’t, maybe it’s quick emails, or texts, but I bet it’s not face to face time.
We stay so long in our offices—or we carry our offices with us. How many business conversations do you have when you are meeting with Jane at the coffee shop after hours? Or how many text messages when poor Jane is trying to have a face to face conversation with you? Huh? Me? I’d never be so rude!
What is it that drives us to this? What would happen if we just left the office at the office? Would a disaster of major proportions happen? Even if we schedule the time off?
Is it riches we are after? Is it status? Power? Have we left our dreams behind to sacrifice for money? Are we afraid of losing our jobs if we don’t work the overtime? Maybe we need to examine what really is the “good life” and what we are exchanging for it.
“Do not overwork to be rich. Because of your own understanding, cease! Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away like an eagle toward heaven.” Proverbs 23:4,5.
