I remember, as a child, getting the instruction from my Dad to “keep your eye on the ball.” He didn’t have sons, only daughters, so we got some of the directives he would have given to his boys. He taught us a love of baseball, some of us caught the football bug (I didn’t get that one!) and we loved car racing and thunderboat racing.
Keeping my eye on the ball, however, is the advice that has stuck with me. When I played tennis in high school and college, watching that ball every second made all the difference to my scoring.
It is good advice to follow no matter where we are in life. I have written a book about the battles of life and how God will see us through them if we stay the course. But, if our eyes are not trained on our Commander, how can we see the strategy He is aiming towards?
I want my eyes trained on my Commander. I want to know the plan. I acknowledge it is His plan and every circumstance is orchestrated to move me forward. There is a goal and at the end of the battle, the goal offers a prize. Victory! And all the rewards that come with it.
But, my eyes have to keep looking for the vision in every situation that looks like a set-back. Yet, every set-back is an opportunity to rise above and win the prize. Instead of crying out in protest at the circumstances that seem so unfair—why not march ahead with determination?
The Standard is in front of us—the King rides His steed above us! We march together as our lives touch one another and our tasks intermingle to bring about His Kingdom. He has called us as vessels of honor to serve Him!
Our Leader is out in front. Let’s train our eyes on Him and march together toward victory!
“But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King” Jeremiah 10:10.
