Protocol
A few weeks ago I saw these turkeys strutting across the street. I thought what a joy to watch this very simple sign of life.
Turkeys constantly wander the neighborhood. They look for food. They dig up our flowerbeds.
They follow the flock protocol. I know. Because once, I flew out on my porch screaming, because I wanted to know what they would do. They exploded into noisy chaos immediately. Their little stick legs made time as they ran around to the back yard and up the hill.
I watched as they stood aside and waited their turn to ascend the hill. If I were the last one in line, I’d have been worried.
Follow The Leader
Turkeys just follow the leader. In true danger, I think the last one in line would have something to be concerned about.
Humans are like turkeys in that we follow leaders, too. We might feel like stepping out of line, or complaining (even as we continue to follow), or try to do something that makes us feel unique.
But the truth is – we follow a leader.
We were designed with a longing to follow. Even leaders are following someone or something. Wisdom is about choosing carefully who to follow.
Dead End Roads
Dead Ends confront us everywhere. Life choices abound. They look like they lead somewhere but when you follow a dead-end road you come up against a barrier. Maybe you can’t always turn around and do a course correction. Especially if danger has followed.
We are back to the wisdom of choosing carefully.
Wisdom of Choice
The Word of God tells us that we are chosen for a purpose. God chose us. We are free to choose the path He has formed for us to follow. It is fruitful.
Sometimes it’s a peaceful path. Danger is far away. The scenery is beautiful and inspiring. We are free to create, move around and enjoy the wildlife, flowers and the bees that buzz in them. Or a gentle breeze with a warm sun. A place of rest.
Sometimes it means warfare. But God has provided the armor. He has gone before us. The choice may look scary, but it is safe because He is there. If we are the last one in the line of protocol, then He has our back.
Follow Well
We lose nothing in choosing to follow Almighty God. And we gain eternity.
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you” (John 15:16 NKJV).
