Delight
I admit it, maybe showing this Autumn Iris in its second blooming glory is overkill. I’ve posted it on Facebook already—the first blooming and the second blooming. Maybe there will be a third blooming yet to come if Jack Frost continues to dally.
This blossom is such a treat during the autumn time of year. We usually see deep greens, oranges, reds, yellows and browns – brilliant colors this time of year. And I LOVE those brilliant colors—especially when the sun gilds them. But we don’t see pinks and purples.
Awe
Our preacher at church this morning, Terry, talked about being in awe and wonder of God. I’ve certainly been thinking about this lately. Terry listed several ways to come into awe and wonder. Some of these included:
- Nature
- Arts
- Beauty
- Meditation (Scripture Study)
- Prayer
- Simplicity
- Relationships (Deep Encounters)
With so many ways to get close to God, why do we hesitate?
I must admit, though, that looking at nature and all it’s beauty DOES drive me to amazement! I love walks where I can admire God’s handiwork.
Wonder
Terry said we are often surprised by God. He’s so right. Think of each season and the changes that happen. We go from hot to cold back to hot again. But is that all? What about the glorious landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes that we view. Are we not surprised? Do we not wonder at the majesty of what spreads out before us?
I speculate about God liking to “show off” for us. Do you suppose He really likes it when we stop our continuous activity to watch what he does? How long does it take to watch a sunset from start to finish? It’s better than the weekly serial drama on TV.
I come back to the surprise of this iris. It’s just not supposed to be blooming now. Of course, it did forget to show up last spring, maybe it’s making up for lost time. At any rate, Jesus knew I missed that particular flower. Yes, I know what colors I have in my garden. How gracious of Jesus to bring along that bloom before winter. All because He knew I missed it. That’s something to wonder about.
“Praise the Lord from the earth!” Psalm 148:7a.
