The Street Light
The other day when I glanced out the window, I had to look again.
It really was no big deal. Avista sent a worker to change the bulb on the corner streetlight. It has burnt out in the past and this neighborhood has enough forest to be REALLY DARK at night without that light. And since I live on a pretty busy traffic road, the light is needed.
One drawback, for me, was that it lit up my house. It pierced into my eyes when I sat on my porch at night. In the summer, I like to leave my bedroom window open to let in the cooler air. The streetlight glared right in there, so I had to make sure to turn my back to the window.
Visible Stars and Trees
The other evening, after the worker left and the darkness started to fall, when I glanced out the window, I had to stare.
I was stunned at the difference.
I couldn’t even find the bulb on the streetlight, but the light was brighter, sharper and left my house in the dark. The rays went right where they were supposed to go—in the street!
No more adjusting when I go to bed at night, either. No streetlight blinds my eyes when I’m trying to sleep. I can leave the window open and even look at the stars or the trees while settling in for the night. Lovely!
Romantic Light
Perhaps it is a silly notion, but for some reason, the effect is romantic.
I’m actually loving the view at night, now. It makes me think about how darkness gets chased away by the light. The dark just cannot stand up to the light.
While staring at this new radiance, an idea that ran through my head is that the road forward is brightly lit. In a way it never was before. Spiritually, isn’t that what happens to us when we seek God? The dark places in our souls get illuminated when the light of God’s Word shines into us.
Jesus is the Light of the World. He lights us up from within. Gives us buoyancy, grace, and peace to look into the dark with hope.
Yes, indeed. I have that reminder just outside my door every night. What a good reason to sit on my porch!
