Wild Mutton Ride

Wild Mutton Fall
I went to the Fair over the weekend with several family members. This year we determined to balance the rides with look-see’s. You know how it is – the kids want to spend the day on the rides and the adults want to look at animals, plants, flowers, watch the rodeo, see exhibits and go through the big building to see what vendors are offering this year. A little something for everyone.
I think we did better this year in this balancing act. We had a great time – all of us!
For sure – the mutton riding is a highlight. You have to have a child under 60 pounds for this. We had one this year. At first, he didn’t want to do it. So we watched and wandered off to do some other things. Then he changed his mind. We headed back to the sheep station to sign him up.
After that, it was a matter of standing in line, getting his helmut fitted and waiting his turn. I wondered if he would “renegotiate his contract” (as the announcer said it) but he didn’t.
It was worth the wait. Like bull riding – the rider is situated on the animal behind the gate. We wait breathlessly for the gate to open and then – suddenly – it does. Animal and rider shoot out of the shute. (Yes, intended!)
We cheered for our little guy to grip that sheep and stay the course. I’m sure he felt like a bull rider. He didn’t make it all the way down to the end, but he made it further than most of the kids contending. The silly sheep did jumping jacks after dropping his rider.
We had a little medal ceremony of our own for our little guy. He’s a winner in our books!
