I wonder whatever happened to the Sunday Drive?
Did it just sort of disappear when we all got electronically hooked up and health conscious? I see people running with their phones hooked up to their ears. All wired up for take-off to where?
Today I took a Sunday Drive detour on the way home from church. The sun was shining, no—more than that—the sun was sparkling down to the earth and I just could not go home or go do chores or anything else. I just wanted to be out in the sun and enjoying what God has provided.
So, I drove along the Spokane River through Riverside State Park. There are a few places to pull over and just sit and watch the river. This time of year, the river is fast, furious, and high. I paid close attention and thought I could hear God’s voice in the rush of water saying, “Listen. What do you hear? Does the speed of the water make you dizzy? Are you feeling tense or do you feel the tension of living flowing away with the water? Rest. Let your spirit take in the joy of the freedom the river knows.”
As I stood there taking it in, God sent me a gift in the person of my friend Gail. She, too, decided to drive along the river and stop for sustenance on her way home. We laughed joyfully to be given this time together.
As we pulled out our phones to take pictures (that sounds bizarre!) we noticed one lone buttercup on the bank below us. Because that is a sign of Spring, we had to capture that flower. Buttercups are truly beautiful. Not only do they cry out, “Spring! Spring!” but they look like sunshine. And they shine like the sun, too!
Gail and I went on our ways. But I still did not go home. I went further out to Nine Mile and across Rutter Parkway to the Wildlife Refuge area along Waikiki. It is still a little flooded. But the drive through was soothing and the sun played peek-a-boo through the trees. The trees, in turn, looked like they were stretching their arms and yawning after their Winter sleep.
Yes, God is good. He’s made a beautiful world. And He loves it when we take the time to love Him through appreciating His wonderful works. Praise His Name.
“O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your Name in all the earth!” Psalm 8:9.
