Overwhelmed. That seems to be most of us these days. We’ve bought into the “I can do it all” marketing of years ago that drove us into a lifestyle that keeps us running.
My non-favorite commercial was one where the woman could “bring home the bacon, fry it in a pan, and never let you forget you’re a man”. What numbskull came up with that? I think I can put that frying pan to good use and it won’t be cooking!
That said, my life is overcommitted. Is yours? Have you asked yourself what you can let go? The job that pays the bills? The non-pay job that keeps you connected to your community? The kids? Sleep? Or most likely it’s the things that give you personal pleasure, play or exercise. Right?
I struggle with busyness constantly. I often wonder what lies behind it. Could it be that technology has sped up life? You have to keep up these days. Maybe it masks loneliness? Or do we judge our importance by how busy we are? Some of us use the excuse that we are busy doing God’s work. That’s a good one. It’s probably true, too.
I give up. It seems that my duties expand the more I try to minimize them. I just don’t see what I can do.
But there is one thing I CAN do. I can bring it before God each day, then see how He stretches time to get the things done for that day. He has a way of bringing ideas and people to mind at just the right times to fulfill those obligations that look impossible.
He has our best interests in His mind. He wants us to be refreshed, revitalized, energized. He is concerned that our bodies are rested in order to carry on the plans He has for us. So join me in taking a few minutes every day to spend time with God, either in His Word, or in the garden or your favorite chair. He’s waiting for us.
“Do not be afraid. Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today…The Lord will fight for you and you shall hold your peace” Exodus 14:13,14.
