I am a sheep.
I guess this is the way life is supposed to be. You lead in one area and you follow in another. So all the things I have said about wayward sheep frustrating the poor shepherd must apply to myself as well. I really want to be a good sheep! I do!
How can I best support my leader(s)? As instruction or direction comes, how can I best apply it to my life or best serve my leader?
My pastor preached a wonderful sermon this morning about Psalm 63. He talked about thirsty longing for God with our bodies and souls (have you ever longed so much for someone that you could feel it physically?). He asked if we have looked for God “in the night watches” (like in the middle of the night when you are tossing and turning?). If we acknowledge what God has done for us, we can praise and worship Him freely. And if we cling to God, He will cling to us.
I call this great instruction—straight from the Word of God, through Pastor, and into my soul to live well this week. As I listen to my earthly shepherd and hear the words of my Good Shepherd, I am equipped.
If I take this attitude with me through the week, I think I will find that I can serve my boss better, too. Serving is what we are called to do. This is how we follow the Good Shepherd. He came to serve us and show us a better way to live. If I can serve my boss and make him look good, then I will have done my job.
And … at the end of the day … I want to hear, “well done, good and faithful servant, enter into My Father’s house”.
“When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me” Psalm 63:6-8.
