We have been trained to think of planning our provisions when we go someplace. If we are backpacking, then we put our food, bedrolls and all the paraphernalia we will need on our backs. If we go camping, oh yeah, we pack tents, sleeping bags, chairs, food in and out of coolers—maybe a boat and the trailer to lug it along.
Or if we go to the ocean, it’s another set of supplies. If we are merely going to work, we pack along yet another bagful of stuff.
So we are trained to provide for ourselves. But how well do we provide for our souls on the journeys of life that we are walking every day? Then what happens when the disasters of life come, much like the tornados, earthquakes and hurricanes this year, that take away our ability to provide for ourselves. What then?
God tells us that He will provide for us if we ask. He’s given us His very Name to call upon. In His Name is every answer we will ever need. I heard a preacher say this weekend that “God’s love backs you up”. I like that. I like knowing that God has my back.
Often I am so completely helpless in my circumstances. I wish I could DO something! I wish I could plan for this contingency or that. But I can’t. I don’t know which way the dominoes will fall or which way I should jump.
Sometimes it’s like being the frightened child in the dark wondering if Daddy will come.
Abba Daddy does come when we cry for Him. He brings His comfort in the dark. He brings joy in the midst of the pain. He gives us courage to take a step when we feel paralyzed. He rubs our hearts like an earthly Daddy might rub our backs.
Things may still be hard, but when we call on Him and offer ourselves, He provides what we need to keep going. He has our backs.
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise” Psalm 51:17.
