Is it true? Does money make the world go ‘round?
In the mail today I got one of those clearing house things that says, “YOU CAN WIN A LIFETIME INCOME OF $5000 A MONTH!” Wow! Should this get my attention? All I have to do is wait for the next mailing for my super wonderful prize number that I need to turn in to be eligible to win.
Sounds easy, huh? Only after I turn in my prize number, then I will get something else to turn in, then something else, then…well, you get the idea. Does anyone REALLY win? Where does the prize money come from? What kind of strings are attached? How much does the government get and what’s left after that. If you win, that is. Surely I am not the only one to ask these questions!
Getting rich quick. The American Dream.
This permeates everything. We want bigger stuff, and spend more and, for our pains, got a big economic crash. What about businesses? The bottom line runs it all. People are expendable.
The scramble for gold is the question of the ages, isn’t it? I remember the joke about the man who talked God into letting him take a suitcase full of gold to heaven with him. As he stood at the entrance with his treasure, St. Peter asked why he brought pavement with him. Does that change your priorities any? Hmmm.
Jesus said to come to Him with our burdens, and not to make an idol of our gold. How can we trust Jesus when we trust gold. Did anybody notice how the gold slips through our fingers and disappears? Jesus never does that. He never leaves us or forsakes us and He is imminently trustworthy.
He fits everything in our lives into a beautiful tapestry—like a mural on the wall—and makes our stories integral pieces of the epic of eternity He is still weaving. It seems to me that this is a much greater destiny to keep in sight than my gold. Don’t you think?
Our money still says, “In God we Trust”. So, will we?
“Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass” Psalm 37: 3-5.
