This morning I saw a child—a little girl—tapping the back of her Father in time to the beat of music in church. He just kept singing while her little body danced on the chair behind him. She was having a good time.
I was having a good time, too. I watched as her Dad kept his attention forward and sang. He didn’t turn around to stop her and they both worshipped the Lord together during that lively song. I don’t remember singing a whole lot right then, but I smiled because I am sure that God was pleased with their worship.
There was such trust in that little girl that her Daddy loved her. She had no fear that he might turn around and be angry with her.
I sometimes wonder at how we think we have to do something particular to please our Daddy in heaven. Maybe He is just happy with us because we belong to Him. Much in the same way that we consider our own children. When they express their talents, their happiness, we love them. They don’t have to do something in particular for us to love them. They simple are.
I think our heavenly Daddy must feel that way, too. I am reminded of the time when Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem and He sat on a rock just looking at the city. I wonder what He saw? Did He see the buildings that represented humanity as we do? Or did He see individuals going about their daily business right through those walls?
I have a picture on the wall in my office (thank you to the artist!) It’s a very meaningful portrait of Jesus that shows Him looking yearningly at the city. The sad love permeates from His Body as He gazes. We are told in the Scripture that He lamented, “Oh I would draw you close, but you won’t come…” That would be anguish indeed for any parent.
Draw close to Him today. Let yourself feel His pleasure in you.
“Oh Jerusalem, Jersusalem … How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!” Mark 13:34.
