Summer is slipping away too fast. I see the orange, rust and brown colors appearing everywhere. It’s time to hurry up and do those fun things. Take some time off work and get some play in!
I did that the last few days. I forgot how much I was missing while working all the time. Working is not bad thing. Got a lot done at the office, in the yard, in the home, but play wasn’t in the picture.
I went kayaking with my friend, Linda. What fun! I love riding the waves on the lake, and the paddling is both relaxing and good exercise. I remembered a couple of adventures. One was at Horseshoe Lake. Linda and I paddled around, explored the little mini waterfall, nearly shook hands with a loon—he wasn’t giving any ground!
As we paddled up the back side of the horseshoe, we saw some boats just sitting in the middle of the lake. You know how it goes—one person looks up and everybody has to stop and look up, too. So, we paddled up to the other boats and lined up to watch the drama on the shore.
Mama Moose, in the water up to her neck, chomped on the water weeds. Baby Moose, on the shore was running back and forth, hollering, “Mom! Mom! Mom!” Does anybody relate to this?
Mama Moose ignored him and kept eating. She kept her eye on us, though.
Baby kept up attention getting behavior, but when he saw he wasn’t getting anywhere, he jumped in the water. We gasped as we watched the poor youngster thrashing around, still crying at the top of his lungs.
What did Mama Moose do? Calmly kept chomping.
We were disgusted. What kind of mother does not rescue her child from danger, anyway?
Well, Baby thrashed himself to shore and pulled himself out of the water (much to our relief!) and disappeared. We waited. And waited. Mom kept chomping and we waited.
Finally, Baby reappeared. We wondered what he would do. Would he keep trying to get his mother’s attention? But no. He quietly trotted over to the onshore bushes closest to Mama and began his own chomping.
Show over.
