Quiet Rest
Quiet rest. I write about it often enough. I live alone. You’d think I would have quiet rest all the time.
Not so.
If a cat isn’t walking around my chair making a bunch of verbal noise, then he or she is chasing the other cat around causing potential disasters. Of course, I have to join the chase. That makes them stop, right?
Then there are the chores screaming for attention.
Yep. Quiet rest.
Other Things
Sometimes other things clamor for attention. Like the phone. I must keep up with all the disturbing news of the day, anybody with me here? To be forewarned is to be forearmed—is that how the quote goes? I wonder what that means.
And the bad guys are always out to get us. Just when I think I have a handle on seeing what is fraudulent, I fall into one. What angst! What anxiety! And what amount of time it takes to clean up the mess and recover. Ai yi yi!
The One Thing
At Scribettes (writers group) the other day, our dear leader Gail wrote out Psalm 19:7-11. It’s a gracious calm for the soul. Knowing that God has everything covered for us. No need to be anxious.
Just as Jesus told Martha in the Scriptures, there is only one thing that is needful. Her sister Mary sat at His feet. That’s it. That’s the place to be.
I may or may not accomplish my goals, and that frustrates me. When I sit at Jesus’ feet and ask Him to order my day, at the end of it I am amazed at all I accomplished.
I love the list this passage gives us. Something special, like a gift, fills every line for us.
So like our God.
His thoughts are toward us.
“The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making the wise simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.
They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;
They are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.
By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward” (Psalm 19:7-11 NIV).
