What do we do in January?
- New Year resolutions that we break within weeks
- A new diet that is really the old diet warmed over
- A new start at the gym with visions of a new body.
I am attending Silver Sneakers classes with some friends. It was a habit before Covid. Then we stopped to isolate. And now we start over. Except that I am a little older. The coordination piece just isn’t there.
“TWO – THREE- FOUR, now change from the left hand and right foot to the opposite side – REACH!”
Uh huh. Sure.
Discombobulated. That’s my new word.
Two, three or four just don’t compute. In the middle of the action, I stop. I wait for my mind to catch up with the instructions. Move the opposite arm. Then the opposite leg. One at a time. NOT at the same time. Who makes that connection while the beat goes on?
March in place. I can do that.
Get a drink of water. I can do that, too.
Onward.
“Make sure your arm is outside your thigh and reach.”
I grunt and groan.
“Arm OUTSIDE. REACH. Yes, that’s right—arm OUTSIDE.”
Ohhhh—she meant ME!
Huff, puff.
“Now let’s sit in our chairs and STRETCH.”
Oh good. The home stretch. Class is almost over.
I can take my uncoordinated self to coffee.
Can you relate?
