We played today. The Sunday afternoon sunshine beckoned and the four of us gals left all the chores and responsibilities to go play.
Water is always a drawing point on a warm summer day. We headed for the park at the Post Falls dam. What fun! We discovered a long disused stone dam and crawled all over it.
We read on the signs that the river had been somewhat diverted from its original course to this old stone dam, and in the heyday of logging in the Inland Empire (as it was known then), logs were sent on over this dam and onward to a westward course.
The rocks and the old river dam were a blast to climb over. We imagined how it might have been in the old days: the roar of the waters, the crashing as logs rolled over one another in the rush downstream. Lots of water power and the men working the system of pumps, pulleys and controls.

We stood on the rocks looking straight up the dam, then turned to look downward from our stance in the middle of the old spillway.
From there, we hiked along the gorge where the river now flows from the present Post Falls dam. Looking down the cliffs, we sure were glad for the fence!
I have seen this dam overflowing with the power of rushing waters, but today we saw mostly the rocky bed. Somehow, I sense the strength and power here even without the water!
Later, on the way home, we stopped at a lake to watch the boaters. We saw a canoe family that we loved to watch! Mom and Dad had the kids tethered in their own boats and paddles, but trailing Mom and Dad. What a great way to teach your kids about the fun and safety of boating! One child was napping in his boat, paddle under his knees. It reminded us of the geese family we saw earlier – the little ones trailing after the parents.
All in all, a very fun day. God is good!
