Is this all there is?”
My thought came as I watched the jellyfish and the sand dollar being washed in by the tide while visiting the ocean shores of Washington State recently. Dead crabs littered the beach as well.
I fancied that the jellyfish, whose pulsating eyes glowed brightly, looked frantic as he clamped his ethereal skirt onto the sand while wave after wave washed over him. Judging by the dull, still circles of his forerunners scattered all over the shoreline, he was headed for extinction. I felt so badly for him.
Next to him, I watched the first live sand dollar I’ve ever seen curling and uncurling as he flipped over and over in the same tidewaters. I figured he would end up in somebody’s shell collection before too much longer.
For these life forms, this is all there is.
But that is NOT SO for us!
God planned for us to live eternally. We are of much more value to Him than the fish of the sea. He made us in His Image with souls and spirits. Over the centuries, He has spent much time and effort with us as He guides us to that beautiful eternal place that He has prepared. Scripture tells us how much He loves us and longs for us to come home to Him.
No drifting to oblivion for us. We have an eternal destination made possible through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Yes!
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” John 14:3.

Thank you for this post. Loved the photos too, LJo. His lessons from the deeps ♥
Hi Nanc: Yes, indeed, lessons from the deeps. He is so good.
Yes, indeed! We can learn from everything He puts in our paths.
Beautiful post, Linda Jo. When I go beach combing in Oregon, I almost always find partial sand dollars – broken bits or sand dollars with pieces missing. I am glad that all of eternity has the WHOLE, complete presence of God. In the meantime, I am so very glad that Christ uses our brokenness to manifest His complete glory!
Thank you, Lynn. Yes, that sand dollar AND the jellyfish both made me think of eternity. God is so good. You said the last line of your comment so well. That we can reflect Jesus–even, or is that because of, our brokenness? Blessings, my friend.
Hi Linda Jo,
Thanks for blogging your July Columbia River metaphorical well written God & Human connection. Grand. Thanks for your Upper Room post today, too! I’ll make a note and hope to read your writing again, atlas on your blog. I might even include my website then. Once again thanks, Don
Hi Don: You are very welcome. God certainly loves and lives in His creation if we only have eyes to see. I appreciate your comments on “The Upper Room” posts.Blessings to you in your walk with Him.
