I think those who say to take time to play probably know what they are talking about. There is something to be said for a change of scenery, getting (yes) exercise, and just plain turning the mind in a different direction than it normally goes.
In the last week, I got to take a kayak trip down the river where I got to meet a moose face to face, drive up to beautiful Canada to stay a few days with friends (loved them, loved their food, loved their countryside, loved the Tea), and then a bike ride at another beautiful site—Harrison Idaho. Aside from a nasty spider bite (at first I thought it a mosquito bite, but no, this spreads differently, is redder, bigger, uglier, and takes a lot longer to go bye bye) it was a great week.
I did feel that the everyday merry-go-round got chased out of my mind for a while. I recommend the occasional change of scenery for medicinal purposes!
Then, this morning, I traversed a sacred path at church. Our pastor is preaching a series on “Ancient Paths.” It is good to go on sabbatical, which he did for a few months, and I did for a whole week. God does refresh the soul when we give Him opportunity.
This morning, Father God did even more than just refresh my soul. But, He restored to me something lost a long time ago. In the Ancient Paths, we are united with our God and with our brothers and sisters who have gone before us. Not just relatives who have passed to glory in rather recent times, but those who showed us love and devotion to a God who gave His Son to die in our place.
In the frenzy of our times, we forget how the saints of old went to the desert ( a quiet place) to seek God. He met them. He will meet us.
I don’t go to the desert. For me, the pine trees and the mountains speak of Him. But I have to stop running and trying to keep up with my schedule to listen when He uses the mountains and the pine trees to call me to sit with Him.
This week I have done some of that, and especially today as I remembered the Ancient Ones who showed us the Ancient Paths. And God met them. He will meet us.
“Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near” Isaiah 55:6.
