Cloud Transportation
“What are clouds, Mommy?”
My children will tell you I answered, “They are God’s cars.” I don’t remember that conversation with my little ones, but as they grew up they periodically teased me about that response to their inquiring young minds.
I can’t imagine why I answered them in that way unless it had something to do with all the whys little children can ask. God riding cars up in the sky could probably make sense to children. When you are small and understanding is just a glimmer, where else does God seem to live?
Pondering Clouds
Then one day I read in Psalms that God makes the clouds his chariot. As I further discovered, the Lord rides on a swift cloud into Egypt and the heart of stone melts in his presence. Through clouds, God has provided guidance as he did through the Red Sea and desert experience of the Israelites. Through clouds, he provides rain to water the earth, and while looking at a gilded sunset, who can doubt the glory of God?
Clouds are a pretty good reminder of all that God is and does. A very short list includes:
Guidance – Does He still guide us today?
Glory – No doubt about this one. His displays are glorious, indeed!
Rides clouds into heaven and down to earth – I have no trouble imagining God riding the clouds wherever He wants to go.
Clouds of witnesses – I often wonder how many are watching and cheering us on in our earthly journeys.
Darkness/Light – We look at a cloud cover and might expect snow or rain. Or we look at fleecy clouds on a warm day with sweet breezes. God giving us what we need to sustain our lives.
Faithfulness reaches to the clouds – His grace and faithfulness travels from earth to heaven constantly. Might clouds speak to us of His kept promises?
Truth reaches to the clouds – The Scriptures tell us this is true. God does see all things in our lives. What comfort can this bring to us—especially when the clouds swirling around us or in our heads are dark and scary.
Cloud Protection
How humble I feel when I realize that our God, who is so magnificent and awesome, rides the very clouds He made – swiftly – to come to my aid when I call upon Him. He is passionate about us. The strength of His love for us is greater than any hurricane or cyclone spawned from a powerful cloud. His arms are everlasting and He is our Eternal Refuge from every enemy. One day, He will ride with the clouds of witnesses and return to the earth for those of us who belong to Him.
Cloud Majesty
Clouds remind us that God is holy and majestic, yet He hastens to our aid when we call. Is there anyone like Him?
I bless my children for asking such a simple question. I will never look at clouds in the same way.
“…Behold, the Lord rides on a swift cloud, and will come into Egypt” Isaiah 19:1.
“He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters, who makes the clouds His chariot, Who walks on the wings of the winds” Psalm 104:3.
“There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to help you, and in His excellency on the clouds” Deuteronomy 33:26.

Linda Jo, I was taken with the source of your musings as well as where the thoughts, and clouds, took you—and us. Places I needed to see at the start of a day. Blessings on you and your kids today! You’ve certainly blessed me. “I bless my children for asking such a simple question. I will never look at clouds in the same way.”
