One of the first places I go to celebrate the annual arrival of Spring is Spokane’s Bowl and Pitcher at the Spokane River. This year was no different.
Along with some other brave souls creeping their way along the narrow path through the cliffs, I pick out every dry spot I can to avoid sliding off left over ice in my quest to get to the canyon lookout. Thus, I welcome the new season above the river.
From there I climb back down to the bridge where I make my way to the middle and stand firm on this swaying span above the raging waters. I spread my arms in exhilaration and listen to the roar.
I’m fascinated by watching the waters rush under the bridge this time of year. It’s nearly dizzying how fast it travels as gallons and gallons of water chase away the snows from the mountains and race all the way to the ocean. On its way, the river crashes against the rocky cliffs on either side of the passage.
We are experiencing a year of flooding due to the flash snows of last month. We are mesmerized by water everywhere. The bridge feels like a swing with all the feet strolling across it. People everywhere stop to take pictures, stare over the side, walk their dogs and their kids across. I also notice people climbing the cables on the banks. That makes me wonder if there is any danger of breaking cables and finding ourselves tumbling head over heels through white waters in this rocky riverbed.
As I stand on the bridge, I reflect how impossible it would be to cross sides of this fast dashing river without a bridge. Life is as turbulent as these waters; the hidden rocks just as dangerous as in the riverbed. Hazardous eddies could keep us whirling indefinitely.
Jesus has provided Himself as our Safe Crossing. He is the Bridge between God and man. He spans the river of life and the way is clear. It’s safe to traverse, even across turmoil. Not that danger no longer exists—we are still on earth after all, but I can’t help but make the comparison as I stare into the currents.
What God has made is good when He is the Foundation!

Great post! I love how Jesus is our bridge. Whenever I cross a bridge on foot, I always pause to listen to the rushing currents below, reflect on who I need to forgive, let go of the hurts, and give them to Christ. Whoosh!
Thank you, Lynn. Yes, every time I cross that bridge in the Spring, that’s how it is. Jesus is our Bridge and our Foundation! Halleluia!
Wow, those waters are high! What a glorious way to welcome Spring. Exhilaration is almost vicarious, reading your reflection. Thanks for transporting me for a few moments.
