Today is Mother’s Day. But my Mom, sister, and I celebrated yesterday as we went to a luncheon. We wore hats. Some of the ladies had beautiful hats, some quirky hats, and some were—well—just hats.
I had a 1920’s style hat that caps your head. A friend gave it to me before she moved to the other side of the state. I found a string of pearls and some floaty clothes to put with it and I pretended to hail from that era. It was fun to celebrate our Mom that way and just have a good time.
Once I got home, I had lots of plans to do chores. But the day was so glorious, I just couldn’t bring myself to do them. So, for a while, I just sat.
I sat on the steps on the back of my house soaking up the sunshine. Doing nothing. I pushed the nagging chores away—and let me tell you—that was hard work all by itself!
But, I sat. And I listened. And I watched. The world is so alive all around us and we don’t see it or hear it. Cars rushed by and created noise. But in the intervals between those busy vehicles, I felt the warm breeze on my skin and listened to the trees responding to that gentle breeze. Trees talk, did you know? I heard them.
I saw the shine of bugs as they wafted through the air. They come in all sizes and shapes. We don’t usually see them unless they are in great numbers and…uh…bugging us. But the sun glinted on them, like dots, as they went by.
I heard the clicking of other insects in the ground. This was a relay. First, one would do a couple clicks, then a couple short clicks, then several long clicks; then another would respond with the same sounds. I wondered what kind of code they were sharing. What were they saying in bug language?
Birds either sang or squawked, depending on their species.
It was like sitting on the lap of my heavenly Daddy, being gently caressed – like fingers smoothing back the hair on my forehead. No words were needed, just a quiet companionship.
Maybe days are coming that will not be so sweet, but this lovely day brought peace.
“There are many who say, ‘Who will show us any good?’ Lord, lift up the light of your countenance upon us. You have put gladness in my heart…” Psalm 4:6-7a.

We are much alike, Sis! I came home from work yesterday, and ignored the chores. I, too, chose to sit in the sunshine and absorb the warmth of the afternoon rays and the sounds of God’s creation around me. It filled me with peace and I loved it! This is not wasted time; it is a renewal of the soul and commune with the Father.
‘communion’; not commune. LOL!
Haha! I love it! I wonder if we were sitting with Father at the same time? Pretty cool! Definitely a renewal of the soul.
