Quiet Love
I wonder what “quiet love” means?
When the Scripture says that God will quiet us with His love, what does it mean?
I have visions of sitting on my porch on a warm, sunny day. My gardens surround the porch and the colorful blooms wave with sweet perfume on the soft breeze. The bees buzz as they go about their work and the birds chirp in the trees. I watch butterflies glide in circular motions together before they fly away. This is quiet. Yes, God’s love does permeate the atmosphere. All over this pleasing scene.
Or, the extreme: don’t you love to be wrapped up in a warm, fleecy blanket, toasting your toes before a blazing fireplace, when the snow is falling outdoors? It’s a cozy scene. Take a sip of hot chocolate to warm the insides, too. And God has provided this quiet scene for His love to cover.
Better Yet
As lovely as the scenes above are, and I sit in them as often as possible, but to feel God’s quiet love brings yet another impression.
What if “quiet love” is all encompassing?
Beginning with how Jesus fully loved us. In His ultimate sacrifice on the cross, He wiped out our sins and His resurrection has made a home for us with Him for eternity. That is an amazing, transcendent love that proclaims His faithfulness to us across all time. We forever thank Him and worship Him.
Then, what would it feel like to be snuggled close to His heart? To hear the quiet beating affirming that love against your ear. To feel the safety of strong arms around you. Maybe you feel His hand stroke your hair. Perhaps you hear the murmured encouraging words. Just like you used to when you sat, as a child, on your parents’ laps.
Can you allow Him to get that close?
God’s Longing
Yet, God longs for that very closeness with us!
Once, Jesus sat on a hill gazing longingly at the city across the valley, teeming with people. His lament strikes my heart.
“Oh Jerusalem … how often I have wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!” (Matthew 23:37) NKJV.
Jesus gazes at us! He longs to be intimate with us!
Can we allow Him to get that close?
