Quiet Moments
Mary Oliver once said, “Why should I not sit, every morning of my life, on the hillside, looking into the shining world?”
Oh yes! This is where I should be! Sitting high on a hill and bathed in the sun, morning or afternoon, looking at all the beauty God has created. Colors stand out. The sun is fresh and sharp. Its warmth caresses my back comfortably as I breathe in deeply the pine scents and wildflower fragrances. The birds chirp and flit between trees, small creatures scramble through the underbrush. I relax in the sweet grass.
Perhaps there is a stream in the picture. I watch the waters stumble over the rocks in its bed and the sun dance on its waters.
Could I do this every day? What would it be like to start out the day like this? Or sit for hours in the afternoon? Like—every day?
Waiting on the presence of God
Feeling the companionship of God
Gazing upon the beauty of God
Enjoying communion with God
He sits by me
He holds my hand
He pulls me close and I know I belong to Him
Getting marching orders for the day
Sharing the joy of life and anticipating the new day
Or soaking in a midday break
Come what may
How sweet the moments
Sitting on the hillside every day of my life gazing into the shining world created by the Lover of my soul.
Precious time away from the world and its cares crowding in.
Can it be?
