In The Beginning
I have been reading Scriptures on FaceTime with one of my grandsons. I am amazed at how God teaches me as I teach my grandson. He will ask me a question and I have to ask God to please give me an answer—quick!
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:1-2, NKJV).
I wondered what that would be like. No sun. No stars. Just darkness. And yet, the beginning of a world swirled with an unformed mist.
Hovering
How long did the Spirit of God hover before creating light and form? Did He have it all mapped out while the dark mist still churned? Like an artist contemplates the canvas before touching it with a brush of color.
The dictionary says to hover means to remain in one place in the air.
But there was no air when the Spirit of God hovered over the deep of a shapeless earth.
I looked a little further. Hovering means to remain in one place, in the air, between two states, at or near a particular level. And my favorite: to linger close by.
So if the Spirit hovers over us, He remains with us. He lingers with us.
Like a lover?
The Deeps
If He hovers over the deeps of our hearts and souls, then perhaps He brings the waters of life to us. In the Scriptures, we read of life being in the waters. And the waters flow from the Throne of Heaven right to our souls.
It’s all about what God does.
- He lingers with us, He is present with us
- He searches out the deep places in our hearts and souls
- He continually draws us to Him
- He imparts creativity to us
- He creates a place of quiet, for rest and contemplation
- He brings peace
The Son Rise
I saw a sunrise the other morning. It was shadowy—just before the sun came up. I thought about the Spirit hovering over the darkness.
And the light came. Fiery, then softly.
Perhaps the Spirit is fiery in His love for us, but soft in bringing about the image of the Son of God in us as the day stretches out.
It is the season. The Son is coming. As He came two millennia ago, He is coming again.
The Spirit is hovering over our hearts and lives.
